There are two options for automated backup of VHS files: replication and data forwarding. Although the VHS configuration file does have keywords for backups, the automatic service backup only writes the service configuration file (Vhs.cfg) to the backup location specified in the BACKUP_PATH keyword.

Replication provides a method for history data to be backed up to a secondary VHS. The replicated VHS must have the same name as the source VHS and must be running on a different server host under a separate CygNet domain if it is to be used for Disaster Recovery. If the source VHS needs to be restored, the data can be imported from the replicated VHS or the history data files can be copied from the replicated VHS. Replication is defined by keywords in the service configuration file. See VHS Replication for more information.
Data Forwarding allows history data to be copied and pushed from a source VHS to up to three destination services. This allows the destination service(s) to serve as a long term repository for historical data. The destination VHS may be on running the same host server as the source or a different host server. See VHS Data Forwarding for more information.
Journal files provide another method to produce a backup of history data. The VHS can be configured to automatically create daily journal files that contain all of the changes to the database for the day. Closed journal files can be backed up easily since files sizes are typically much smaller than the main VHS database files.
VHS Journal files are kept in the journal directory for up to a maximum of 35 days depending on configuration settings. See VHS Journal Files for more information.
Configure the following keywords with a valid parameter in the VHS configuration file (Vhs.cfg) to enable automatic backup of the service configuration file:
